Objectives
By the end of this module you will be able to:
- Recognize physical, emotional, and behavioral signs of compassion fatigue.
- Distinguish ordinary tiredness from deeper strain.
- Notice signs in colleagues.
- Respond early.
Lesson
Physical and emotional signs
Signs can include exhaustion that rest does not fix, trouble sleeping, headaches, irritability, sadness, dread before work, feeling numb, or finding it hard to care.
Behavioral signs
People may withdraw from colleagues, avoid certain people or tasks, become cynical, make more mistakes, or use alcohol or other substances to cope.
Responding early
Small signs are easier to address than big ones. Noticing early and taking action, such as more rest, talking with a supervisor, or seeking support, can prevent deeper strain. If signs include hopelessness or thoughts of suicide, connect with a licensed mental health professional, call or text 988, or call 911 for immediate danger.
GGN practiceMy signal list (about 10 minutes)
Write your personal early warning signs, the ones that tell you your cup is getting low. Share the list with a trusted colleague or friend if you wish. If this brings up pain, pause and reach out to someone you trust, or call or text 988.
Fictional storyFictional Story 2.1: The social worker
Andre, a social worker, noticed he was dreading his phone, snapping at his partner, and having a second glass of wine most nights. He told himself it was just a busy season.
Questions to consider:
- Which warning signs does Andre show?
- What could he do?
Discussion: Andre shows dread, irritability, and increased drinking. He could talk with his supervisor, look at his caseload, build in recovery time, and connect with a licensed mental health professional if signs continue.
Reflection Prompts
- Which warning signs do you notice in yourself?
- How do you respond when a colleague seems strained?
- What helps you act early?
