Understanding Grief: A Starting Place
Grief can affect emotions, thoughts, relationships, routines and the body. There is no single timetable or correct way to experience it.
Grief is more than sadness
People may experience sadness, anger, relief, guilt, numbness, confusion, longing, changes in concentration, sleep or energy. Experiences vary with the person, relationship, circumstances of the loss, culture and support available.
Support can begin with presence
Listening without trying to fix the loss can be meaningful. Practical help, patience and continued connection may also matter. A grieving person can choose the kinds of support that feel appropriate to them.
